Guangzhou Petrochemical: Metallocene Polypropylene Enters Semiconductor Supply Chain

Recently, Guangzhou Petrochemical delivered its first‑batch metallocene polypropylene (mPP) products to a domestic semiconductor wafer manufacturer, marking a new breakthrough in the company’s development in the high‑end polyolefin materials market.Metallocene polypropylene features high transparency, outstanding toughness, low extractables and high cleanliness. It meets semiconductor industry requirements for anti‑static performance, contamination prevention, mechanical damage resistance and high dimensional accuracy.Since the start of this year, Guangzhou Petrochemical has vigorously advanced the R&D and pilot production of metallocene polyolefins. Its R&D team conducted in‑depth market research to accurately identify customer demands. Focusing on unit adaptability and process stability, the team carried out technical research and continuously optimized key parameters. Two new grades of metallocene polypropylene were successfully produced in mid‑March. Performance testing and trial applications by downstream customers show that key performance indicators of the products match or even outperform imported counterparts, and the products have obtained official certification.

Sinopec Guangdong Petrochemical: Chromium‑Based Condensed‑Mode PE Sets New 40‑Day Long‑Cycle Operation Record

On April 9, the first train of the 800 kt/a full‑density polyethylene unit at Sinopec Guangdong Petrochemical operated in condensed‑mode production using chromium‑based catalysts, achieving stable long‑cycle operation for more than 40 consecutive days. This sets a new record for condensed‑mode runtime since the unit was commissioned, marking a critical breakthrough in process control for chromium‑based condensed‑mode technology and ushering in a new phase of stable, efficient and low‑consumption operation for the facility.Chromium‑based condensed‑mode technology represents an advanced process in polyethylene production and a key industry pathway for quality improvement and efficiency gains. Nevertheless, this technology has long confronted industry‑wide challenges including stringent control precision requirements and difficulties in sustaining system stability. Long‑term stable operation has remained a core goal pursued by the sector. To tackle this industrial bottleneck, Sinopec Guangdong Petrochemical formed a dedicated technical team in 2025 to launch research on chromium‑based condensed‑mode technology for the first production train. The team addressed multiple technical hurdles such as enhanced reactor heat removal, precise adjustment of induced condensing agent concentration, reactor activity modulation and oligomer control. A five‑day condensed‑mode operational test was successfully completed in January 2026, delivering the milestone initial technical breakthrough. This technical advance delivers substantial capacity growth. Preliminary estimates indicate the 800 kt/a full‑density polyethylene unit can achieve an additional output of 50‑80 kt per annum. Meanwhile, ethylene consumption under condensed‑mode conditions rises by 10‑15 tonnes per hour, effectively easing ethylene tank storage pressure and enabling efficient upstream‑downstream coordination. It injects fresh momentum into the enterprise’s high‑quality development.

Sinopec Guangzhou Company: First 90‑Ton Trial Batch of New Polystyrene GH660LS Shipped to Custom Customers

The first 90‑ton trial‑produced batch of new polystyrene grade GH660LS from Sinopec Guangzhou Company has been dispatched as scheduled for delivery to custom‑order customers.Polystyrene GH660LS is another newly‑developed product built on GH660, the company’s existing product with national‑level green product certification. Belonging to the impact‑resistant polystyrene series, it delivers favorable flowability and impact resistance, and is widely used in equipment housings, toys, household tableware, modified plastics and film products.Since the beginning of this year, Sinopec Guangzhou Company has further implemented the “One Product, One Strategy” philosophy. It has intensified customer visits to keep abreast of market trends, and developed market‑oriented products to continuously meet market demands. Early this year, the new‑product R&D team received customer feedback requesting a new grade to satisfy their application requirements. In response to such demands, the team held multiple special seminars to sort out technical specifications and influencing factors, discuss raw‑material formulations and production parameters, and formulate trial‑production plans. During trial production, R&D technicians strengthened process monitoring and optimized production parameters according to real‑time operating conditions. Inspection staff provided close coordination and timely product analysis to supply data support for product tuning. The new product was successfully manufactured in the end.
